Retro EPCOT Center Retrospective: Part 2

March 24, 2010

Today’s “Retro EPCOT Center Retrospective” features….
You guessed it, a Tomorrowland mug!

I know, I know… But it’s retro future-y so I’m going to include it. This is part of the Designer Mug Series, one of the two things I did with my actual name on it (very exciting). I had carte blanche to do whatever I wanted, as long as it related to both Disneyland and WDW.

Well, it’s me, and I couldn’t do EPCOT, so in my head the next best thing was Tomorrowland. Given the opportunity again, I would probably do something with the Tiki Room — but I still like what I came up with.

I wanted to commemorate the land’s better days….

I was rather in a hurry (finished on my very last day of work), so I had to limit the detail. I kept everything fairly simple, in both color and design. My first idea was to use the World Clock from “old” Tomorrowland in Disneyland….mostly because the shape seemed serendipitous in relation to my mug. I also made use of the Skyway and Rocket to the Moon.

Finally I inserted some favorite Disney phrases, because I could.

From the Disneyland TV show: “(Tomorrowland) A promise of things to come.”
Meet the Robinsons (among other sources): “Keep Moving Forward.”
Walt Disney/Horizons: “If you can dream it, you can do it.”
Space Mountain Exit Queue: “In the future, you may find yourself off world.”
Carousel of Progress: “There’s a great big beautiful tomorrow, shining at the end of every day.”

(While random, I always loved that Space Mountain quote. It made me feel very immersed in the whole ride experience.)

So, without further ado…

Tada! Here’s the final product. As far as I know, they are still for sale all over property. Tell your friends, because now is the time! Now is the best time! Now is the best time of your life — to buy one of my mugs!

  1. Test the awesome virility of the comment box …go ahead… it taunts you horribly.

  2. 1) The Communicore pin is awesome.
    2) Retro rainbow Stitch is amusing.
    3) Mug information would have been useful LAST WEEK
    4) I’m glad that I also have that Contemporary shot glass or I would have been really quite put out.

  3. 1) Yes, it’s really too bad it got axed.
    2) I thought so as well, even if slightly odd. My only piece of stitch merchandise.
    3) Oh “MC,” I barely knew you last week. Hard to believe. Besides, I can only assume that if you actually saw it and weren’t immediately hit with consumer lust, then you are just flattering me.
    4) I’m going to be the one put out if I find out you have the poly one too.

  4. 3. Well, problem is that I had given up looking in stores for quality merch. The same reason I missed your pins.
    4. Oh, how I wish.

  5. Your work is beautiful! I have to admit that I own almost everything that you’ve shared in these recent posts – the Figment monorail, the set of 5 retro Epcot pins, the SMRT-1 Vinyl and the Tomorrowland mug! We have such similar tastes – even down to the love of the Tiki Room. :-) Thank you for sharing your illustrations and stories. I actually applied for the same internship a few years back, but ended up being accepted into a different team. It sounds like you had a wonderful time at DDG – keep up the great work!!

  6. I just had a post about your mug appear on my blog (Disleelandia) and I friend of mine found your site for me. It is great to learn about the artists behind the things we collect! I’ll be following your site with interest! Have a look at my post about your mug and let me know what you think.

  7. OMG, you made that mug?? We love that mug! We own that mug!

I found your blog when I googled you for a post about the Mickey you drew for me on Sunday at the Festival of the Masters. I’m even more excited now. :)

  8. I just found your blog, Celeste, although I’ve been following you on twitter. (I’m DisneyEcho and ICanHasPxieDst). Woah! Disney DOES still make quality merchandise!! …or more precisely, you do! “In the future, you may find yourself off world.” Epic! Continued success to you and the Crackerland project.
